What to Expect in a Reiki Treatment

REIKI BLISS
What to Expect from Your Reiki Treatment
If Reiki is new to you, it is completely natural to have questions about what will happen, what you might feel and whether there is anything you need to do. I have created this page to answer the questions I am most frequently asked and to help you feel comfortable and prepared before your appointment.
There is no particular way you need to experience Reiki. You do not need to concentrate, meditate successfully, understand energy healing or feel any particular sensation. Your experience is individual to you.
Please have a browse through the questions below before your treatment. I hope you will find everything you need here, but if there is something I haven't covered, you are always welcome to email me.
Before Your Reiki Treatment
Where can I experience Infiniom Usui Reiki? 1. In the comfort of your own home via distant/remote Reiki. 2. In person within a peaceful natural health clinic. 3. Outdoors in Sussex, via Nature Reiki sessions in the summer months.
▸How long is a session? A distant healing session is 1hr 15mins. In-clinic is between 60 and 90mins depending on venue. Nature Reiki is 1hr30mins to include 10mins grounding afterwards.
▸ Do I need to do anything before my appointment? Very little. The most important thing is simply to give yourself a comfortable space in which you can relax. For distant Reiki, it can help to prepare a few things beforehand so you aren't distracted once your treatment begins. Put your phone and unnecessary notifications on silent, let anyone at home know that you'd prefer not to be disturbed, and make your space cosy and comfortable. You might also want to walk the dog, arrange any expected deliveries, choose your lighting or music and have a blanket nearby. Around 15 minutes before your appointment, begin winding down if you can. There is nothing else you need to prepare or achieve — this is your time to relax and receive.
▸ Do I need to complete a consent form? Yes. An e-form will be emailed to you before you attend your first appointment. Please read it carefully before signing.
▸ What should I wear? Loose comfortable clothing. Your body temperature will naturally drop as you relax, so you may need warm socks and a jumper or cosy blanket to hand.
▸ Should I eat or drink beforehand? Hydrate by sipping water in the hours preceding your appointment. Avoid a large drink or meal before the session for comfort reasons. Hydrate well after the session.
▸ Do I need to meditate or clear my mind? No, it is not a requirement. Meditating beforehand or during the session is optional and up to personal preference.
▸ Do I need to believe in Reiki? No. You do not need to hold any particular spiritual belief or convince yourself that Reiki will work in order to receive a treatment. I do, however, encourage you to set a gentle intention to receive before your session. This doesn't require belief or expectation — it is simply a way of giving yourself permission to relax, be receptive and allow the experience to unfold naturally. You might simply think to yourself, “I am open to receiving this Reiki treatment in whatever way is right for me.” Then let go of any expectation about what you should feel or what should happen. There is nothing you need to achieve.
▸ Do I need to tell you everything that is going on in my life? No. In clinic sessions will include a brief preliminary chat for you to share any reasons/hopes for your session. With distant healing you have the option to chat for 10minutes before your session or a few days before, via Zoom or telephone. Alternatively, you can just send a few details by email or Telegram app - this is a popular choice, especially for follow-up sessions, or situations where you lack privacy and cannot talk openly.
▸ Can I ask questions before booking? Yes. Please email with additional questions.
During Your Reiki Treatment
▸ Do I need to undress? No. Please remain fully clothed.
▸ Do I have to lie still? Stillness enables a more relaxing experience. If you need to scratch, fidget, or become uncomfortable and need to turn over onto your side, this is not a problem.
▸ Does Reiki involve talk therapy or counselling? No.
▸Can I listen to music during distant Reiki? Yes. Gentle music can aid relaxation. Ask about the Infiniom playlist on Spotify.
▸ Do I need to talk during Reiki? No. For in-clinic treatments, there will be an opportunity to chat briefly before the session and briefly afterwards.
▸ Will you touch me? I will check before we begin the treatment if you would like hands-on Reiki, hands-off, or hands placed on just particular places. It is fine to change your mind during the treatment too, and ask for hands on/off. I will also ask for general preference for hands on/off in the consent form that is sent with your first booking.
▸Can I stop the treatment at any time? Yes.
▸What actually happens during a Reiki treatment? 1. While you are lying down and relaxing with eyes closed. I will be connecting to Divine Reiki Healing Energy and sharing this energy with you. Your body, mind and spirit will receive this transmission. As I work, I may intuitively feel drawn to spend longer around particular areas. This doesn't mean that I have detected illness or that anything is medically wrong.
▸What might I feel? Everyone experiences Reiki differently, and there is no particular sensation that you need to feel. You may feel nothing. Some people notice warmth or coolness, tingling, heaviness or lightness, gentle pulsing sensations, changes in awareness of different parts of the body, or simply a wonderful sense of deep relaxation. You may notice colours, images, memories or thoughts drifting through your awareness. Emotions can sometimes surface unexpectedly, and occasionally people become tearful without necessarily knowing why. You may also notice perfectly ordinary physical responses as your body relaxes. Tummy gurgling, yawning, sighing, swallowing, small muscle twitches or jerks, and becoming very sleepy are all things that can happen. Please don't feel embarrassed by any of them — you don't need to suppress or apologise for your body's noises or movements. Some people describe sensations that seem to move or change during a treatment, while others experience very little physically and simply feel peaceful afterwards. You may even fall asleep — and that's absolutely fine. Most importantly, try not to spend your treatment wondering whether you are feeling the right thing. There is no right Reiki experience and no need to manufacture a sensation. Simply notice whatever you experience and allow yourself to relax.
▸What might I hear during in-clinic Reiki or a home visit for pet Reiki? You will hear my prayer at the start and an expression of thanks at the end for the Divine healing Energy. You may hear me release energy on behalf of yourself or your pet. A sigh, clearing my throat, blowing out air gently, my stomach clenching and releasing, the sound of me sweeping your aura with my hands at the start/end. Background music
▸What if I don't feel anything? That's completely fine. There is no particular sensation you need to experience.
▸What if I fall asleep? It's fine if you fall asleep. It will not impact the effectiveness of the treatment. It is common for clients to drift in and out of micro sleeps during the treatment.
▸Can my pet stay with me during distant Reiki? Yes. You may find your pet will lie next to you and relax. You may hear you pet sigh.
▸What does Intuitive Reiki mean? It means that as a practitioner, while sharing Divine Reiki Healing Energy with you I am more receptive to intuitive and psychic information. I may feel guided to spend extra time in one area, use a different technique with my hands, or may shift to a different location on the body. I may sense aches and pains, heat, a muscular weakness, a tightness in the fascia, a stiffness. I may sense your emotion within your body or chakra. Intuitive impressions are observations, not diagnoses.
Do you use animal communication during Animal Reiki? No. But I do always tell the animal they are loved and their owner loves them and asked for Reiki to support their health and wellbeing.
After Your Reiki Treatment
▸Will you tell me what you sensed afterwards? In-clinic treatment - yes, I will share with you the areas of the body that I felt absorb the most healing energy. Distant Reiki - I will send a feedback report within 24-48hrs after treatment to share with you the areas of the body that I felt absorb the most healing energy.
▸Can I call you afterwards and discuss anything I felt during my distant Reiki session? Please wait until you receive your feedback report and email with any questions. If you need to schedule a brief call, especially if the client is your pet, this can be done at an additional cost.
▸What kind of aftercare is advisable? 1. Ground yourself with grounding techniques. 2. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. 3. Rest and relax. 4. Avoid stress.
▸How often do I need to book treatments? See how you feel in the weeks and months after your session, and please assess for yourself when you would like to rebook. There is no prescribed number and I encourage clients to decide according to their circumstances and experience. One-off maintenance sessions are also available for general wellbeing. Look out for special offers for block bookings.
▸Would it help to keep a Reiki Healing journal? This is entirely optional; perhaps notice how you're feeling beforehand and anything you would like to bring gently into the session, then afterwards note anything you experienced or observed.
▸What are some good ways to ground myself after Reiki? If you feel deeply relaxed, dreamy or simply want a few minutes to reconnect with your surroundings after Reiki, here are some of my favourite tried-and-tested grounding techniques. You don't need to do all of them — simply choose whatever feels helpful to you. Reconnect with your feet Stand comfortably and become aware of the different parts of your feet connecting with the floor or ground. Gently shift your weight between your heels, toes and the inner and outer edges of your feet. Deep Rooting If you enjoy visualisation, imagine strong tree roots growing downwards from your feet into the earth. Take a moment to feel supported, steady and present. For a deeper spiritual grounding practice, you can visualise a cord of light travelling from you deep into the earth, connecting securely with its centre. Set the intention: “I am fully grounded, present and connected to the earth.” Try the 5-4-3-2-1 technique Notice: 5 things you can see 4 things you can touch 3 things you can hear 2 things you can smell 1 thing you can taste Come back to ordinary physical activity Gentle movement, a slow walk outdoors, washing the dishes, making a drink or brushing your pet can all help bring your attention back to your body and surroundings. There is no single 'correct' way to ground yourself. Find the techniques that leave you feeling comfortably present and settled.
