Reiki Healing Session

What does energy healing feel like?

For many people, Reiki begins very simply: you lie down, close your eyes and rest.

There is nothing you need to achieve. You don't need to meditate successfully, clear your mind, understand energy healing or experience any particular sensation. This is time in which you can simply stop doing for a while and allow yourself to receive.

During an in-person treatment, I can work either hands-on, hands-off, or with a combination of the two. Your comfort and boundaries are important, and I will always ask your preference beforehand. You can also change your mind at any point during the treatment.

Reiki is gentle and often deeply relaxing, but gentle does not necessarily mean insignificant. Sometimes the most meaningful changes are subtle and become apparent gradually — rather like a seed beginning to grow.

What Do I Mean by Healing?

When I use the word healing, I don't necessarily mean curing an illness or making a difficult life experience disappear.

Healing can mean many things.

It might be feeling calmer within yourself, beginning to rest more deeply, becoming more aware of what you need, responding differently to situations that once overwhelmed you, finding the courage to establish healthier boundaries, reconnecting with parts of yourself that have been neglected, or gradually feeling able to move forward after a difficult period in your life.

Sometimes healing is physical. Sometimes it is emotional, personal or spiritual. Often these different parts of our lives overlap.

For some people Reiki is simply a deeply relaxing form of self-care. For others, it becomes one gentle part of a much wider healing journey involving reflection, personal growth and perhaps other forms of professional or therapeutic support.

There is no particular destination you are expected to reach.

Your healing journey is your own.

How Can Energy Healing Support You?

People come to Reiki for many different reasons. Some simply want an hour in which they can deeply relax and step away from the demands of everyday life. Others come during periods of change and adjustment, emotional difficulty, loss, stress, health changes, or personal reflection.

Reiki may offer gentle support for:

  • Deep relaxation and rest

  • Periods of stress or feeling overwhelmed

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • Reconnecting with yourself after spending a long time caring for everyone else

  • Times of grief, loss or significant life change

  • Feeling stuck or disconnected from yourself

  • Developing greater self-awareness

  • Making space for reflection and personal growth

  • Exploring your spiritual life or sense of purpose

  • Supporting your overall wellbeing alongside appropriate healthcare or therapeutic support

Some people come to Reiki because there is something they actively hope to support or heal. They may be living with fatigue, physical discomfort or pain, while others are seeking support with emotional or mental wellbeing, or are moving through a difficult period in their lives.

My approach to Reiki is holistic. I don't see our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing as entirely separate from one another; what is happening in one area of our lives can affect how we experience another.

Reiki is energy healing, and deep relaxation is an important part of the experience — but relaxation is not its only purpose. During a treatment I work intuitively with the whole person, offering Reiki to support, harmonise and rebalance while allowing the treatment to unfold according to the individual.

This does not mean that Reiki diagnoses or medically treats the cause of pain, fatigue or other symptoms, and it should sit alongside appropriate healthcare where this is needed. Rather, Reiki can form one part of a person's wider approach to healing and wellbeing.

And sometimes people arrive without being able to explain exactly what they need. They simply know that something doesn't feel quite right, that they have been through a lot, or that they feel drawn towards receiving some support.

That's perfectly all right too.

You don't need to have your healing journey mapped out before you begin.

Healing the mind, body & spirit

Our experiences can affect us in many different ways. Something that happened years ago may still influence how we feel, how we respond to certain situations, how easily we relax, the relationships we form, the boundaries we set and the way we experience ourselves and the world around us.

For some people, healing therefore becomes much more than addressing one symptom or one difficult memory. It can be a gradual process of supporting the whole person — mind, body and spirit.

Reiki as Part of a Wider Healing Journey

Reiki can play a supportive role within this process.

Some of my clients come to Reiki while working through the longer-term impact of difficult or traumatic experiences. Others may be experiencing grief, prolonged stress, major life changes or simply recognise that something from their past continues to affect them in the present.

You do not need to tell me the details of what happened in order to receive Reiki.

Reiki is not counselling or psychotherapy, and during a treatment
I will not ask you to revisit, analyse or recount a traumatic experience. My role is to offer Reiki gently and respectfully, allowing you to receive the treatment without requiring you to explain or justify your history.

For some people, Reiki sits alongside counselling, psychotherapy or other appropriate professional support. Others may also explore practices or complementary approaches such as meditation, mindfulness, EFT, EMDR or body-based work according to their individual needs and the advice of appropriately qualified practitioners.

I am very supportive of this multimodal approach to healing. Different forms of support can have different roles, and Reiki does not need to replace another therapy in order to be a meaningful part of someone's journey.

Healing Can Unfold Gradually

One of the things I value about Reiki is its gentleness.

People do not always experience dramatic changes during or immediately after a treatment. Sometimes the changes they notice are quieter and become apparent over time.

A person might begin to recognise an old pattern more clearly, feel differently about something that once felt overwhelming, become more aware of their own needs, find it easier to establish boundaries, reconnect with enjoyment or purpose, or simply notice that they are beginning to feel more like themselves again.

These experiences are individual and cannot be promised as outcomes of Reiki. But they illustrate something important to me: healing does not always look like one sudden breakthrough.

Sometimes it is a gradual process of change, awareness and growth — rather like a seed beginning to grow.

You Remain in Control

If you have experienced trauma, you are always in control of what you choose to share with me. You may tell me as much or as little as you wish.

I do not need your whole story in order to treat you with compassion.

Reiki can be one quiet, supportive space within a much bigger journey — alongside the people, healthcare, therapeutic support, personal work and other resources that are right for you.

Life Experiences That May Affect Us

There is no single definition of a difficult life experience, and we don't all respond to the same events in the same way. Something that profoundly affects one person may affect another differently. Sometimes we immediately recognise that an experience has had an impact upon us; at other times, we may only begin to understand its significance much later. Experiences that can leave a lasting emotional or personal impact may include: Bereavement and significant loss Relationship breakdown, divorce or separation Difficult childhood experiences Bullying, humiliation or social exclusion Caring for someone through serious illness Living with illness, injury, disability or persistent pain Pregnancy loss, fertility difficulties or the loss of a child Domestic abuse, coercive control or stalking Sexual violence or abuse Physical or emotional abuse Neglect or abandonment Sudden accidents or frightening medical experiences Witnessing serious injury, violence or death Military service, conflict or experiences of war Displacement, migration or loss of home Crime, assault or other experiences in which personal safety was threatened Difficult experiences within religious, spiritual or controlling groups Workplace bullying, redundancy or loss of a long-held career Financial hardship or periods of profound uncertainty Estrangement from family or the loss of an important relationship Supporting someone through addiction, mental-health difficulties or crisis The death, illness or loss of a much-loved animal Major life changes that alter our sense of identity, security or belonging This isn't an exhaustive list, and an experience doesn't need to appear here — or be given a particular label — for its impact upon you to matter. Sometimes what looks relatively small from the outside can have been enormous for the person who lived through it. We rarely know the whole story of what another person has carried.
